On a separate note, I am so into gouache at the moment, it just dries so quick and gives me that opacity that I love, while still allowing for nice blending and sheerness. I got some new teensy brushes lately, helpful for my tricky to spot signature. By the way, I am loving the fact that my spell-checker wants to change gouache to moustache…
A few months ago my buddy Victoria and I had a bit of a shopping day to prepare for the summer season. I am typically a solo-shopper these days (I blame having so many male friends in the UK) but it was great to have a friend to share the experience with, especially someone as interested in clothing and stylish as her! The 70s were definitely in the air as we hit the streets of Stockholm, trying on natural colours and fabrics, flares and fringing. Thanks to some persuasion I got the eyelet cotton crop from these posts, a clear summer favourite of mine.
We both had a bit of a moment in & Other Stories with the magical white long elegant dress you see above. With lace inserts, a tie waist and lacy butterfly-sleeves, it was a mere daydream away from floating around our ankles in a field of wild flowers, or swaying along with loose locks to the rhythm of a summer festival . Price-wise it stung our eyes, and it was clear the number of opportunities to wear something like this would be very low, and even the changing-room queue was much too long to dare try them on.
But sometimes you just know.
A couple deep breaths later, having found the last two in the same size, we made a pact to wear more dresses this summer and bought them. The white dresses. We immediately ran across to Urban Outfitters with a plan to try them on and return them straight away if they weren’t all we dreamed they would be. But of course, the second we tried them on, two plywood rooms across from each other, the dresses’ faiths were sealed. These were keepers. Now I’ll admit, there is something kind of hilarious about knowingly buying matching clothes with a friend as you get older. I couldn’t stop imagining the two of us appearing to a double date with our boyfriends like twins from The Shining just to see their reaction. But that’s part of the fun, the fact that two different people can rock one thing just shows it is a great design!
I am still waiting for the “right” occasion, but I am so pleased with this dress. It is really beautiful and elegant and somehow makes me feel calm when I wear it. As if it just gathers worries and allows them to slip down the silky waves in the skirt. Perhaps it is not meant to be worn at the “right” time, but at the wrong times, when we need the boost of something as simple as a dress.
I recently hung it outside to air out some wrinkles and got a surge of inspiration after seeing a climbing plant resting behind. I immediately had to set about capturing the white dress in paint. In a few hours I had created a simple gouache painting, not as planned as my usual work but just as fun.
And on that note, I shall go to bed and dream about the white dress. The dream that came true!
